Instead of a fusible link can I install a maxi fuse on my Avanti.I know the link should be 16 gauge but what size fuse would be used and which is the better method to use?

The Maxifuses start at 20A I think and go up to 60-80A. There are a couple holders for them I have run across. One has 2 screw terminals and the other has pigtail wires. The pigtail wires look like either 6 or 8 gauge. You need to know how much current the car pulls in normal and "worst case" conditions (all lights, blowers, radio, etc) on to get a start on picking a fuse. I am not familiar with Avanti wiring, does it have a fuse link now? Does the alternator and regulator connect direct to the battery?

I have not looked on the Littlefuse website for some time, their site stinks for finding stuff it seems. I am at home with dialup or I would check the pdf files that are relevant. There should be a application paper on fuse selection and also the data sheets (2nd link) for the Maxifuses that will give the I-t (current vs time) curves. Those will tell you how long it takes the fuse to blow with a given current.

I'd think either the link or fuse would work provided its picked correctly. I once had the "hot" wire from the alternator on my old mustang rub through to the engine and short out. That wire ran to the battery as it was the charging wire. Fortunately there was a fuse link near the battery by the solenoid that burned open instead of something else!
