  • Exhaust tips

I have the stainless steel system on my 61 hawk, 289 and would like to know if the stock exhaust tips I see on many hawks in Turning wheels make the car sound better than tips sold at HP muffler shops. I have the 2 1/4 inch pipe and edelbrock performance mufflers. Do the stock tips restrict the system?

No effect at all that I've noticed.

Since V-8 Studebakers have 1 3/4" tail pipes, the original AC-2840 reproduction Hawk style extensions will be a very tight fit, if they even work! [:0]

All these do, other than look very nice and correct is direct the flow downward, away from the bumper!

I have available tips that are used on Cadillacs in stainless that are 2 tips per side. They are tips and not deflectors and do offer a bit of a rumble even with stock mufflers. I have sold these to 3 Hawk owners and they were satisfide with the sound and they are very complimentary to the rear look of the Hawk. Renee Harger also bought a set for a 1941 Stude street rod. Let me know if I can help. jimmijim

I don't understand why an exhaust 'tip' would effect the sound at all. Are guys running these without mufflers? I understand how a resonator on the end of the exhaust changes the sound and I have known of people running them without mufflers. Isn't an exhaust tip just a piece of chrome or stainless pipe?

I have had both types of Hawk exhaust tips on the car, in my case the one that actually is a dummy and exhaust comes out the bottom and not the end does not alter the sound. The 56J accessory one that looks like a collapsed pipe end, does add a touch of rumble as it slightly restricts flow. However, I have Don Simmons (Silvertone) medium sound mufflers on my car.

That's great to know. Even though this is an is post this info helped me decide not to purchase these marginally useful items. I was not aware these are non functional, and only deflectors.

I don't understand what is Not to like?

If you buy an "Ornament" for your Car, it is not supposed to be functional. Exhaust extensions are for looks only.
How would it help anything except Bumper rust, to have the exhaust blowing out thorough the "Teeth" on the end, instead of down?

In principle, an exhaust extension on the end of a tail pipe that is larger than the tail pipe will help pull exhaust out of the tail pipe, increasing rear-wheel horsepower. Example: the Avanti's exhaust extensions.

True minimally, But, I have never seen a '40's to 60's Classic Car tailpipe Extension that made enough Sound difference to notice, if THAT'S what the OP is expecting.

The muffler is the largest contributor to that.

Yes, I've never thought that any exhaust extension made any difference in the exhaust sound. They are a styling element to this day on just about all modern cars.

I had a pair of Hooker resonators on a 64 Hawk; sure sounded nice! (It had 2" tailpipes, too)
