  • Checking automatic transmission fluid

Can someone tell me how to check the transmission fluid on my 1953 Commander?

Is it to start the car. Let it warm up. With foot on brake. Pull the gear select down to reverse and then back up to park. Then with foot on brake pull down to drive and check the fluid level?

I have looked in the owners manual and the shop manual but I must be looking right through the instructions.
    Thank you,

Best thing to do is: to have a buddy doing the checking while
you keep everything under control, but from what I remember
from my 53 Sedan, that is/was the correct procedure. I believe
    Mr Biggs told me that.....

Check it the correct way then just check the level in neutral with the engine running. You may be able to compensate for the difference. The difference in my Lark is not enough to worry about, and I can do it myself.

1 Warm it up well -important for proper fluid level (increases vs cold) but also to decrease splatter on the dipstick from planetary units
2 put into all gears momentarily to clear bubbles in system
3 Put on parking brake, keep foot on brake,
4 put in Drive OR low -IMPORTANT! Important enough to be mentioned in service bulletin. With brake bands applied it mimics driving conditions where the fluid is in use and will be lower level vs neutral, more importantly it locks up part of spinning planetary drums to decrease splatter ataht causes false readings on dipstick
5 check level, do several times to make sure you can see level correctly and consistently

Oh Gary, 1 other thing from memory.....if you find that you need to
add some fluid, just do a little bit at a time to get yourself back up
to the Safe/OK line.....It might take several attempts, but better
than finding out you have way more than you really need.
