  • Electrical: 6 volt alternators? One-wire?

On another thread of mine about batteries, someone mentioned a 6 volt alternator. Of course, alternators are much better than a generator, so once again, I am inviting any and all suggestions for such an animal. Sources, brands, model numbers, etc. Also, is it a one-wire? Does it have the wide pulley? Any pics of the modified mount for it?

Many of my chapter members have one-wire alternators for their 6 volt Studebakers. I bought mine at some place in Arkansas a over a decade ago for about $100, and they paid postage. Sorry - don't remember the place. I got the idea from the Model A guys who drive their stuff everywhere and often, and they don't give a crap about keeping it stock if it makes the car dependable and safe (juice brakes, etc.).

It was an easy fit, used an alternator strap from a junkyard Camaro to mount it - took 10 minutes, worked great. Your voltmeter will no longer work, of course.

Makes your old 6 volt headlights BRIGHT, and the smaller pulley really sings when you downshift. You could hit Google for some answers, but you never know - the local O'Reillys might have a clue. Good luck!

Contact Quality Power in Yucaipa, CA. 909-794-1600, or e-mail at Qualitypower@aol.com
The 6 volt, positive ground alternator they sell is a one wire GM type. They also have them in 8 volt. Be sure to let them know what size pulley you have. The one on my 1955 President V-8 is 3/8".
The last one I purchased was in 2016 and cost 135.00 plus shipping.

Perfect! They offer them with either the smaller diameter pulley or the original diameter pulley, both for the 5/8" wide belts. 60amp output, positive ground. $135.
They are also the ones who offer an alternator built in a generator casing, but for nearly $500. Sure would look nice, but FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS???
        Thanks for the lead, Eddie!

for what its worth.....here is what I did......bought a mid 70's chevy 12 volt single wire rebuilt alternator for about $45 at advance auto....bought the 6 volt internal regulator and wide pulley from an online supplier.... installed them myself, total was about $80 and it was easy to convert.
