I have been pouring over the I961 Hawk wiring diagram 3WD-394 and I do not see any mention of the Amp meter. Is it called the generator indicator on the diagram?

In order for the Ammeter to WORK, the Load has to go THROUGH the Meter, so NO, do not put the Ignition Switch and Headlights Load on the "other side" (+) where the Batt./Solenoid Red wire goes!
It goes on the Right Side with the Voltage Reg. Black Wire.
And NO, no Hawks have NO Ammeter. Yes, ALL Hawks from 1956 to 1964 and all '63 to '66 Lark Types use real Ammeters. A Good Diagram for a Generator equipped Hawk is in the '57 Golden Hawk one, this one:

The ignition switch and lights do NOT go through the ammeter, they are in parallel with it, look at a wiring diagram that has an ammeter. It is just where they pick up power from. I figured if he's asking, he's really asking what is connected to what; nobody these days seems to know how to ask the question they really want the answer to.
The simple answer to the original question is simply NO; but what does one learn from that.
Neither wiring diagram for the '60 or '61 shows an ammeter, they only show an idiot light.
And, if you look at your golden Hawk diagram, it also shows the ignition and the brake light power coming off the + side of the ammeter.Last edited by bensherb; 05-21-2019, 08:21 PM.

My OP was related to the wiring diagram which I had titled "1961 Studebaker V8". Apparently it is actually showing the idiot light that you have mentioned, which is apparently incorrect in the Hawks case. Mine is the original dash and does have an Amp meter. The one for the 1957 Studebaker V8 shows the Amp meter, but I am not sure about the other things.
I have found someone that is supposed to be the local "old car wiring Guru" so I plan on explaining all this to him and hope that he can figure it out. My thanks to you both.Don Watson

The wiring diagrams on that site are mostly factory. Some are AEA, which is what you were looking at. Yes, it's labeled incorrectly. As Rich said, the'57 Hawk diagram will work just fine. The Studebaker shop manual doesn't specifically list a 1961 diagram, but it does show one for 1960 C body cars which would be the same.Restorations by Skip Towne
