  • Electrical: Hawk hard to remove light switch & dash switches trick

So, on most of the Hawk dash switches, the special tool to remove them can only do so much. If the nut is really crusty it will turn the shaft along with the nut and twist the internals of the switch and ruin it.

I've had a few fails over the years that ruined a switch, and on one, it damaged the dash when the switch body turned around into the dash and cracked it. . I recently had to do one that had sat out in a parts car and had to learn a cool new trick to 'save it' . The proper tool to remove the switch nut had no chance of working. It started turning both parts right away. ( I soaked it twice a day in PB blaster 3 days prior. )

Using a variable speed drill, I drilled the slot of the 'nut' straight down until it almost went through. I used a good sharp bit just smaller than the width of the slot. I did it on both sides of the nut until it was so weakened two of them just fell aside with slight pressure from a small screw driver. One of them I managed to drill it so nice it drilled through clean and stopped short of the dash.

I ruined a 6 dollar nut to save the dash from damage and also saved 2 switches that still worked. I hope this helps.
