  • Brakes: Turner Brake/Magnum 500 rims....

New Turner brakes have been installed, however, there is a rubbing issue with the Magnum 500 wheels on my 64 GT Hawk....the installation shop suggest a 1/4" plate between the hub and the wheel.....any advice out there?

You can grind off the high spot on the calipers to give clearance. My '70 Avanti has Magnum 500 wheels and two of the four had the same issue when Turner Brakes were installed. The problem is rim offset...even though Avanti Motors used the same 15"x6" dimensioned Magnum 500s, different production batches had slightly different offsets. My car must have received rims from two different production runs and gave no clearance issues with the stock calipers. I solved my issue by keeping the two wheels that don't grind on the front.

You can use spacers (steel...not aluminum) or a bit of judicious grinding to solve the problem.

      Agreed.
While the Turner bracketry is good to stop a MAC truck, the GM calipers are pretty sturdy also.

I agree with some "careful" grinding material away from the calipers (?) to clear the wheel rim (rim or center ?).

I would NOT go over 1/4" thick spacer.
Also, aluminum or steel spacers are just fine. Actually, an aluminum is a better choice as far as I'm concerned. I would like to see ANY information where a well designed, aluminum spacer, used properly...caused ANY damage to the wheel, drum, rotor...OR any other part of the car...for any reason.
As a compressed member...zero problems as long as a good spacer is used. NOT an offshore cheapo..!

While I've never used spacers, I have seen others use aluminum spacers and crack or break them by using too much torque tightening the lug nuts...fault of the user. That's why I recommended steel over aluminum but I do agree that if you use the proper torque specs there should be no problem. Quality of the spacer makes a difference...as Mike said...avoid the offshore made garbage.

Grind a little away from the caliper.

That’s what I did for the calipers to fit the stock 16” wheels on my Champ

Probably a dumb question but what rubs? Caliper, control arm, grease zerk, Brake line,Banjo bolt among some things.

In my case it was a high spot on the caliper's casting...I'm assuming it's the same issue on his GT.

There are two versions of Magnum 500's. The early version with a taper on the inside section of the ring will rub. It can be cured with a little grinding on the caliper and/or bracket and using a .125 spacer. The later version from the late 70's on up uses a ring with a horizontal area blending into a sweeping radius eliminating the taper. They fit with plenty clearance. I have Magnums on our Avanti with Turner brakes. They clear fine. They are the late version.

The reason I asked is I thought Jim switched to the 4X4 calipers on the recent series to resolve that problem and the OP said recent. It's just easier to describe the problem needing a solution generally.

Not anything aimed at you Bruce as you provide a generous amount of solutions to a plethora (and many) of the forums problems.
