  • Electrical: Regulator?

    Okay stupid question hopefully not a stupid answer on my 52 Champion is the regulator insulated from the firewall I just bought a new regulator and there's no insulation on it and my old regulator I have lost.

    Just going on memory here, but I think lots of these old electromechanical voltage regulators used grommet style insulators to protect the contacts from unnecessary or excessive vibration, not so much to isolate them from ground. I would have to go out and check mine to refresh my memory.

      Yes the regulator has to be grounded to work correctly. Even though there are rubber grommets in the mounting holes, there should be a tab that is attached to the regulator base and the other end of the tab should be located over one of the mounting holes. If the tab is damaged or missing, a piece of wire attached between the regulator base and firewall will work. Bud

          The regulator is grounded as is the generator, but to assure the ground is continuous it is recommended to ground the generator direct to the regulator.

            I like to run an extra wire between the generator case and the base of the regulator if one isn't already built into the wire harness. The extra wire will ensure that there is a good ground connection between the generator and regulator. A length of 14 gauge wire is good as there isn't a large current draw. Bud
