I'll call Dave in the morning. He might have one for me. Thanks for the idea, that just might be the ticket. Dave might even know what the issue is as he's the carb expert, after all.

Is your float sinking? With brass floats you shake them and if you hear splashing it has a pinhole. With cork floats you wipe them dry with a rag and then press with a screwdriver if wet appears the cork is saturated. I use a fuel return filter and line back to the petrol tank to keep the alcohol fuel cooler by keeping it moving but to get some crud from the float needle there is a trick you can use once you get it running. You close the choke and rapidly pump the accelerator which sucks the crud through and if it is small enough out through the accelerator pump ports. It also washes you cylinder walls a bit to make your rings seat better.
If you car is ugly then it better be fast.....

If you have an electric fuel pump that might be putting out 5-8 psi or more and you think it's overpowering the carb needle valve, you might try a Mr. Gasket fuel regulator for about $35. It's adjustable to the 3-½ to 5 psi pressure described in the Shop Manual.

I've done the same to my 1962 GT Hawk 289 and two-barrel carb and have it set for 4-½ psi.
