  • Transmission / Overdrive: T86 E 1A rebuild question

    Hi All,

I have a couple of questions about rebuilding a T86 E 1A. Ive looked around to find another thread about this to no avail.

    1. Are the gears from a Jeep, Ford, etc, T86 the same as Studebaker gears. My guess is no but I'm not a tranny guy and that the gear ratios may be different. I have read that the T86 in trucks are geared differently.

    2. I have read about putting T90 gears in the 86 case. Is this a reasonable thing to do? Also, is the suffix(E 1A) a date code or ????

I think I probably need to replace the 2nd gear and syncro. I haven't opened the case yet since I want to get some advice first.

Thanks in advance for your help.

T-86 gears are generally the same regardless of the brand of car, because all the T-86 transmissions are made by Borg-Warner. The input and output shafts will be different with different brands of car.

Why would you want to put T-90 gears into the transmission? T-90 gears are straight cut and noisier. You cannot mix T-90 and T-86 gears.

It's important to realize that you do not have to redesign the transmission or attempt to make it better somehow. The as-is design is proven and reliable. Just renew the worn parts and replace them with ones that are up to factory specification.

Good luck. I was going to rebuild my T-86 a few years ago, but realized that it was beyond my capabilities.

We're fortunate to have one of the world's leading experts on T86s among us here.

Detail exactly what year, model and engine from whence your T86 comes.
Detail exactly the use and gear ratio.

He will be along soon to answer your questions.

I've modified the title of this thread to be more informative and more searchable. Please keep readability in mind when composing titles - be descriptive!

            Thanks for the replies.
Roy, I don't WANT to reinvent the wheel, I had read that the T-90 was an option because of T-86 parts being difficult to find. So I thought I would ask. I was looking at different sources for T86 parts and they were all for pick-ups and Jeeps.
I wasn't sure that the parts listed were the same. I know that ford, buick, among others used the T86, these gears may or may not be the same. If they are GR8! I know that the input/output shafts are specific to their application. Also that spur gears make more noise that helical gears. My intention was not to redesign anything but from what I have been able to find, up to this point, the available parts were not listed as "fitment" for Studebakers. that's why I came here. I wanted to verify that the parts are interchangeable. I have complete confidence in my ablility to rebuild the tranny. I have done all the work on Lollipop myself, including clutch replacement, new front suspention, springs, king pins, bell crank and related bushings etc.
jack vines: I really thought I was specific. My user name is 56phawk. Thats pretty specific. PHawks with manual trannies were T86. Mine has OD and was asking about gear fitment for parts that I came across.
None of the above is written with emotion, It is simply a statement. Sometimes it is easy to read in emotion where it is not intended.

            259 Sweepstakes 4 bbl
            T86 E 1A
            Gear Ratio: according to the manual 3rd = 1.0, 2nd = 1.55, 1st = 2.57, reverse = 3.48
            OD = 0.7

You can only 'mix and match' gears IF the tooth count, etc jives with the other gears inside. Example: do not take a 'Jeep' second gear and just drop it in without checking that it mates with the cluster gear.........

I stock T 86 parts. All of them.
