In the process of restoring my '58 Phawk, I noted that there does not seem to be a switch in the trunk light circuit, yet when I checked the wiring diagram it indicates that there is a switch in that circuit. Mine appears to be wired so that the trunk light would be on whenever the running lights are on, regardless of whether the trunk is open or closed. If there is a switch, is it supposed to be a mercury tilt switch or a button that is depressed by the trunk lid

Never go in to the trunk without a flashlight. If you can see, they are easily opened from inside.
There's a mercury capsule switch in the socket and, yes, it is wired to the park lamp circuit, meaning it won't come on unless you have at least the park lamps on.
It would be a simple fix to run it from a constant hot circuit if you wanted to have illumination without turning on the vehicle's lights.Brad Johnson,

At the junk yard the workers had to remove those mercury capsules and put them into a container. I should have saved a bunch of them.
In high school I used to have about half a cup of mercury, but don't know what happened to it when we moved.
