  • Wheels / Tires: Tire question?

Any opinions on Hanook or Cooper tires? Any other brand that somebody would recommend for a '57 Silver Hawk?

Cooper............made in the USA, make white walls and have not had any problems with the ones on my Daytona since 2012.
Hankook.....imported and had some de-lamination problems with one on my F350 diesel dually, but I did use and abuse that truck.

I have Coopers on my Wagonaire and Hankook on my Avanti. I have had no problems on either. The Hankook is probably a little more premium tire, but Coopers are the only company still offering whitewalls on our kind of cars. Hankooks have our sizes, but only in blackwall. I run 215x75x15s on both cars as they are much closer in diameter to 6.70x15s than 205s.

I had a ruined Firestone on my Wagonaire and I couldn't match it with Firestones so I called my Cooper dealer and asked for a set of 215x75x15 whitewalls. He said they didn't make whitewalls anymore, but he was looking at his computer when he said that. All of a sudden he said "whoa, they still do have them". He said he could have them the next morning so I had him order them. I could just see a ten-year-old brand new tire, but the date code on all four was just two months old (and that was only two months ago that I bought them).

Coopers are my tire of choice when I need tires if what I need is available. My '70 Avanti has Coopers on it. My Explorer and my wife's Fusion have Hankook and Michelin tires...that what the factory put on them. So far I have nothing but good experiences with all of them.

I have Coopers on all my Studebakers, my daily driver Dodge Caliber, my Dodge Dakota pickup, and both of my Roadtrek camper vans. They are pretty affordable also.

I put a set of Hankook tires on my Lark.
Since they have unsupported (no bead stiffeners) sidewalls, they require a higher pressure than many tires. The upside of that...you can remove that ugly power steering mechanism with NO hard steering as the outcome. And no, the ride is not obviously harsher...just a little on rough roads.

My experience with Coopers has not been good. I worked for a livery company that had a fleet of sedans and limousines that got a lot of miles on them in a year. The original equipment tires on the vehicles lasted very well. When they were worn out the company put Coopers on, strictly based on price. I never remember a set of them wearing their tread out - at least one of the four tires in set always had a failure first, like tread separation or a sidewall blowout. This was a few years ago. Hopefully, they made major strides in the past few years. Of course, a collector vehicle does not see the use of a livery vehicle. Based on this experience, I have not purchased any Cooper tires. I also have not purchased any Hankook tres, but I would buy them.

I just bought a set of the Hancooks for my 65 Bonneville. Oddball 14" size and a lovely narrow whitewall. Not a bad price either.

I have the Hancooks on my CE too. Blackwalls though....15".

I swear by the BF Goodrich Radial TA's that I've been running exclusively on my '63 GT Hawk for the last 33 years.

I really like the look of TAs on Avantis. I had them on my '84 several years back and I had used them on another Avanti some years ago.

I have had good luck with Cooper tires in the past. That is what I intend to get for my 52 when I get to that. The trucking company I worked for used Hankook tires on some of the trucks and the tire man said they held up well.
