  • Electrical: 1950 Studebaker turn signal light(s) in dash

I'm restoring my 1950 Champion and I'm finishing up all the wiring in the car when I noticed something. It doesn't have the original turn signal lever. It was added on later on and I didn't realize it until I was redoing the wiring. Long story short it currently has it set up to a little light mounted to the dash that flashes when the turn signal is in use. I would like to hook it up show the directional arrow flash on the speedometer so it looks more original. However I'm missing the light housing the snaps into the back to make it work. Does anyone know if this can be bought and if so where? I have everything to make it work just not the housing for the light.

Wouldn't you need TWO, one for each Arrow?

I believe what you need are the "Bulb Sockets" for #51 6 Volt small, round, glass, bayonet base Bulbs.

There will however be a wiring issue with an aftermarket Flashing switch that has only one wire for the indicator instead of one wired to the front turn signals for EACH Side, as on the factory wiring and switch.

I would contact your Neighbors Anne Goodman and Husband in Fresno SDC and see if they have a parts car to get them from, all Studebakers are the same.

Most other makes have not used these since the 1950's, so no New Parts are likely to be found.

Thanks for the response and you are correct I am looking for the bulb sockets and there is two of them. I don't think I would have the wiring issue because I think the single light mounted to the dash was an after thought when it was added since the bulb sockets are not there. I came to that conclusion because it has the wiring for the two lights but it is currently taped together to the one light so it turns on no matter what direction is selected. To be honest I'm surprised the car did catch fire on how some of the wiring was done but I rewired the whole car and fallowed the Studebaker wire diagram.

I am very close to Anne Goodman because I'm the VP of the SDC San Joaquin chapter. They do have a 49 parts car but it doesn't have the turn signal option. That is why I turned to here. At this point I don't care if I have to buy a wiring harness for it as long as it comes with the bulb sockets. I just don't know if any one has one or not.

Are those just the sockets that are used for all the dash lights? (I don't have a 50 parts book handy.)

The photo is of dash light sockets. On the turn signals I have, which are factory option, the signal light socket is not grounded to the chassis through the dash panel. I don't know if this holds true for an after market turn signal. Although when I got the car it had an after market turn signal and those signals were also isolation. So I'm going to guess that kits available at that time probably did the same thing. You could probably sort this all out using the wiring diagram.

Thanks for the information. I will look at the wire diagram again to see if there is a ground wire. I don't think there is but I will need to double check.
