  • WATERBORNE PAINTS

I just got an Eastwood catalog and they are selling water based car paint. Says is takes much longer to dry, and are selling a fancy hair dryer to help speed up the dry time.

Anyone ever used a water based auto paint?

We don't to automotive finishes in our shop, but we've been shooting some waterborne finishes on FURNITURE for the last couple of years. It's not crap, but it's alot harder to spray than the old lacquers and it DOES take about 10 times longer to dry.

I think most of the domestic auto manufacturers have begun shooting this stuff and I know that this is ALL we'll be seeing in CA in the next couple of years.

From what I've seen, the final finish is suberb.

Does it roll just like house paint? Here is a picture of my '49 fire truck after two hand rolled coats of Rustoleum Safety red.

Does it need a special primer for proper adhesion?

Water bourne paints are "coming" to the Collision industry. First in California, In July 1990, water basr primer and HVLP spray guns were mandatory, with BIG fines if a regular paint gun was even found at the shop.
BASF and I think it's Glasurit, have water base basecoats, they're still using solvent based clear coats.
Drying time, is longer, but not that much.
If you use a water base primer, it will NOT stil to bare metal! You must use an etching primer first! Water base primers can be wet sanded, after a 24 hour period.

We only tried some water base a few weeks ago, I'm not 100% convinced on it for a top coat yeat!

Convinced or not, the water based stuff is here to stay. Before too long, there will be bugger all solvent based paints around.
It's an environmental and health thing.
