  • Herman Thoms

This was posted on FB. July 23, 2025.
"I'm very sad to announce the passing of Herman Thoms of the Studebakers West Duo . Herman was a lifelong Studebaker expert, vendor, and mechanic; never owning a car that wasn't a Studebaker. He was a gentle soul, and a great friend to many. I cherish the memories of going over to the shop and spending time conversing with him. He always greeted me with a smile, and either wanted to know where my dog was so he could give him a pet, or wanting to know what sort of Studebaker Adventures I was up to. I enjoyed picking his brain for answers when I found myself needing them, and found he always had the answer I was looking for. You will be greatly missed Herman, thanks for all your years of dedication and service. The Studebaker world won't be the same without you."

So sad to hear. He was a great friend and resource and will be missed. The changing of the guard continues its slow and relentless pace.
I will keep his family in my thoughts as they mourn his passing.

Ditto Eddie as he built the harness for my '57 Clipper Wagon. Who else could do that now?

Carl and Herman have long been the epitome of everything good in SDC. Herman was always kind, helpful, and endlessly enthusiastic about the cars and the people that make up our club.

I'd be willing to bet that Herman's '51 Land Cruiser has been driven to more SDC International meets than any other Studebaker, ever.

        Rest in peace, my friend.

Very sad to hear indeed. Definitely a notable loss to our Studebaker community, and just the world as a whole. Herman and Carl both are just really nice folks, can't ask for better. Wishing Carl and all of his family and friends condolences.

See this announcement. It does not mention any services though.

Herman was pretty shy about picture taking. I don't have many.
