I’m so sad to share with all of you that Larry Metz, my Co-Chair of the SDC Chapter Newsletter Judging Committee, passed away on June 6th. Although his role was usually in the background, his contribution to this program was substantial. He was a Judge for the Internet Division newsletters. He was the one to work with the Judge’s scores to compile and determine the award levels to be given.
Larry was Editor of The Tempo, the newsletter of the B.C. Southern Interior Chapter in Canada, for many years which gave him an understanding of the challenges of producing a newsletter. One of Larry’s major achievements was the revamping of the original judging program in 2015 so Editors are judged against a set of criteria like the cars, watches and toys/memorabilia. This changed the program significantly and, as a result, more Editors are recognized and receive awards.
In 2024, Larry received the well-deserved Larry Swanson Award for “Outstanding Dedication to the SDC Editor Recognition Program”. I will miss Larry’s amazing organizational skills, his insight and dedication to the Editors and his wonderful sense of humor.
