  • John Ernst

I just found out that John Ernst passed away this past weekend. I don't have any specifics other than it was due to complications from a major surgery.

          Very sorry to hear this.

John and I exchanged a few Diesel truck stories over the years, and he supplied me with some copies of factory literature when I bought mine a little over 30 years ago. My condolences to his family and friends.

I'm guessing that there are few people here that realize just how extensive John's Studebaker collection is. He spent the last 50 years accumulating, restoring, and preserving a large number of Studebaker cars, trucks, and memorabilia. I remember him telling me that he owned 11 Diesel trucks, for example.

His main building is 25,000 Sq Ft and there are a couple of other sizable buildings on site as well. It's all packed. I posted several pictures on the truck forum a couple of months ago:

For those that have been in the hobby long enough, you'll remember the name John Ernst. Back in the 1970's he was a regular contributor to Turning Whe

In addition to his interest in Studes, there are other commercial trucks that he felt were significant. Olds Toronados, and a few other 1960's era GM cars. And then there are vehicles that he purchased new over the years and left them "as is"... Such as a '79 Trans Am, 400 big block with 4 speed. He bought the car new, drove it home from the dealer, and never drove it again.

Our hobby has lost one of its most passionate enthusiasts.

I am just seeing this, I *think* I last saw John at Asa Hall’s estate auction. I believe the blue dump truck pictured once belonged to Asa.

if my memory is correct John also owned a Dodge Big Horn.
