  • RIP Pete Seeger

    Farewell Mr. Seeger.

I met Pete Seeger twice a long time ago. I found him to be a gracious man. He was a wonderful folk singer and musician and always thought of others first. I was saddened to hear of this passing.

Ninety-four qualifies as a ripe old age I think. I love Pete's music and regret I never had the chance to see him perform in person.

Pete Seeger lived in the town I grew up in and adjacent to the town that I now live in. Pete was often listed as living in Beacon,NY, but he did not live in that city, he lived in the Dutchess Junction section of the Town of Fishkill. I live in the Town of Wappinger, but have a Village of Wappingers Falls address as that is the Post Office that handles this part of the Town. .

Always enjoyed his music particularly as a member of the Weavers.

But in other matters I'm afraid he and I would have little to agree upon. In any case, RIP Pete.

          This remembrance from Arlo Guthrie:

"Well, of course he passed away!" "But that doesn't mean he's gone."

"I usually do a little meditation and prayer every night before I go to sleep - Just part of the routine. Last night, I decided to go visit Pete Seeger for a while, just to spend a little time together, it was around 9 PM. So I was sitting in my home in Florida, having a lovely chat with Pete, who was in a hospital in New York City. That's the great thing about thoughts and prayers- You can go or be anywhere.

"I simply wanted him to know that I loved him dearly, like a father in some ways, a mentor in others and just as a dear friend a lot of the time. I'd grown up that way - loving the Seegers - Pete & Toshi and all their family.

"I let him know I was having trouble writing his obituary (as I'd been asked) but it seemed just so silly and I couldn't think of anything that didn't sound trite or plain stupid. "They'll say something appropriate in the news," we agreed. We laughed, we talked, and I took my leave about 9:30 last night.

"Arlo" he said, sounding just like the man I've known all of my life, "I guess I'll see ya later." I've always loved the rising and falling inflections in his voice. "Pete," I said. "I guess we will."

"I turned off the light and closed my eyes and fell asleep until very early this morning, about 3 AM when the texts and phone calls started coming in from friends telling me Pete had passed away."

"Well, of course he passed away!" I'm telling everyone this morning. "But that doesn't mean he's gone."

            Very little in my case.

Let's hope no one here is inviting politics in to our forum. We should all know better by now. Close that door before our moderators must.

If Pete liked red cars, I liked blue cars and you like yellow cars - where's the politics? Let not build mountains where none exist.

Heard this quote on a BBC biography from an interview he did back in 1979.

"Music at its best helps us, not only to forget our troubles, but helps us to understand our troubles. And, occasionally, to do something about our troubles."

Always thought the measure of a person was how much they thought of the needs of others over the needs of themselves. Thank you Mr. Seeger.

                    One of my favorites :

                    Music-Pete Seeger

                    To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

                    To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to build up,a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

                    To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

                    To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late

Great! Now we have almost politics and almost religion.

NBS Nightly News last night reported that there was already a movement to name the new Tappan Zee bridge after him.
