  • Craftsman Radial Arm Saw recall

If you have a Craftsman radial arm saw produced between 1958 and 1982, you might be able to get a $200 blade guard retrofit kit for free, as well as a new cutting surface, fence and associate parts!

So here's the deal: I was on Sears Parts Direct looking for new table parts for my '75-vintage 10" Craftsman, when I ran across a link to this site:

Apparently, the Consumer Safety Product Commission is making Emerson, who designed and supplied these saws to Sears, offer the full-blade guard kit to owners of any of these saws. My saw, like many others, shipped from the factory with the metal guard that covers only the upper half of the blade; the retrofit is the newer kind with the retractable clear plastic guard that fits the bottom half of the blade as well.

It gets better: the kit includes the entire table top and rip fence as well as new frame crossmembers. So, I signed up, poked in the serial number from my saw, and ordered the retrofit kit, which easily contains $300+ in parts, and it will be here in a few weeks.

Once I'm done, I'll basically have a newly-refurbished saw. So if you've got an oldie that looks like this:

Hmmm, Hard to believe they'd push safety issues on a 55 year old saw, unless it's a testament to how well they were built........ However, I bought one in 1976..... Almost exactly like yours..... and wore it out by the late 90's. It's long gone..

Great saws! Bought a used one for $100 and used it hard for a few years. The projects were finished and I sold it for $100 and then wished I would have kept it. Well-built product.

Thanks for the tip, Clark. Checked my model number, and it turns out that my saw is too old to be retrofitted. I could return the business end for a $100 refund, but I think I'd rather just keep the saw.

I got the free kit for mine several years ago. Very nice.
