  • McCulloch engines,, What happened??

In the 60's, I raced go karts and had excellent performance with the Mac engines.. At the time nobody had any competition that could rival their engines.. I got out of racing when the market was taken over by the foreign rotary valve 2 cycles engines and fuel blends.. The Mac engines were amasing in the amount of power produced from such a small package.. Did McCulloch go out of business after Paxton took over or was that the way it happened?? Are they still in business??

They went bankrupt in '99 and a Taiwanese company bought the name. You can buy "McCulloch" chainsaws still, but they ain't what you remember.

Having recalled some of Robert McCulloch's history of enterprise you may find this site of interest. He was sold a bridge like sometimes mentioned, but he had a plan for it! If you have visited Lake Havasu you have seen it. Notice his wife's maiden name.

To: benaslopoke,----McCulloch kart engines certainly were popular in the sixties (I recall the MC-5, MC-6, MC-10 and MC-20) Sometimes they were set up as twins. Other popular kart engines (at the time)
were the 'West Bend' and the 'Poulon' brands........Great times back then!

last year I picked up an AMF Roadmaster Mo-ped with a McCulloch engine on it. Grandson had a blast with it untill he decided it was too much trouble to keep it running.

When we raced go-karts as a kid I can remember McCulloch triples on the back of some karts. Quick? Yes. Too fast? Almost. We couldn't afford the high dollar engines so we ran a 8.5 horsepower Power Products engine. I wasn't as light and fast as some of the others, but it was fun and all the parts came straight from our local Sears store.
