There's a little bittersweet reminder to this post for me. My late father-in-law was a former policeman and retired as a Major from a city Fire Department. Like me, he loved working on things. Sometimes, he would tear into things that didn't need fixin' just to examine how they worked. Sadly, he developed Alzheimer's and we did our best to care for him as he succumbed to the terrible conditions that it causes.

One night, during one of many hospital stays, my Wife, who is a RN was staying overnight in his room. She told me about awaking during the night to find him doing exactly what that picture depicts. She said she found him under the bed attempting to "fix" it because he didn't like the way it was put together. While some of the incidents were kinda funny...having to watch such a brilliant mind lost to madness and confusion was heartbreaking.

My Uncle Luther, in the mid-stages of the disease, once whispered conspiratorially to my other Uncle, Gerald, “C’mere. I gotta tell you something”

          “What, Luther?”

“You won’t believe it but I’m living with 2 women!”

          “And who might they be?”

“One’s named Jean and one’s named Jeanie. They look a lot alike.”

“Do you ever see ‘em together?”

          “No”

“Doesn’t that tell you something, Luther?”

          “Yeah. I think they’re twins.”

Of course, his wife of 30 years was named Jean. But at that point in his life, he could not get his clouded mind around the fact that “they” were the same person.

And I was sure the post would recreate a "street racing" scene from "Two Lane Blacktop" using wheel chairs in the hallway!
