Yes, Jeff; questions about the show are valid....as we'd probably all suspect anyway, being real hobbyist pickers in our own way(s).

Son Joe (of Charleston culinary fame) watched the show and saw them "pick" a Studebaker item some time ago. He then contacted their "main store" trying to buy it for me for a Father's Day present or some such. He was given the run-around to such an extent that he wasn't even sure they'd bought the thing. In any case, it was never offered to him for any price.

Fishy, to say the least. BP

American Pickers are based out of Iowa. That merchandise is all reproduction, the tin signs are sold all across Ebay for $29.95.

The name of their store is "Antique Archaeology".... not American Pickers.
If it's not a scam, it's improper usage of the shows name.
The lawyers of the History Channel will be in touch.... soon.

I bought that exact same "retro" Studebaker sign in Ouray, Colorado for $19.95 USD. It is a nicely reproduced piece for the price I paid......

The American Pickers stores as their are two are called "Antique Archaeology" as Chris has stated. There 2nd location opened this year is located in Nashville TN in an old wharehouse very near music row downtown. It is a great store in a vintage building.

                    Hi,

I watch that show all the time. The stars of the show are Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz. Their business in IA is Antique Archeology. The business is separate from the History Channel. The History Channel has a production crew follow those guys around and they get paid for that. The History Channel's American Pickers Warehouse is not a scam. It is not affiliated with Antique Archeology. It is advertised on every show two or three times and is said to be "inspired" by Mike and Frank's picks. Sure the prices are high; people watching the show have no idea what stuff goes for so they go to the site advertised and they buy that stuff at inflated prices. Sounds like there is a savvy marketing guy somewhere over at the History Channel.

One thing that this show is probably doing for those in the auto hobby is it's showing an uneducated public that some of the stuff they've been planning to toss into the dumpster has a little bit of value. People are going to see that show and hang onto stuff that was likely going to be in a landfill if they hadn't seen the show. Sure, the folks that see the show and hang onto stuff have unrealistic expectations of what they can sell the stuff for; but the point is that now they are preserving stuff that would have been lost and there's nothing wrong with that.

That's a "glass half full" attitude.
And I agree with it. If it keeps stuff out of the dump, that's good.
Eventually, they'll sell the stuff for what it's worth to someone knowledgeable (but as always, the incautious might get burned) ....rather like the folks who inherit an old car and think..."It's old, it's rare...it must be worth what I see cars on TV bring."
It may not bring the expected windfall, but they'll get something for something that would be otherwise trash and something neat will be saved.

What you must remember is that these shows are all 'scripted'. Case in point - Storage Wars. These guys rummage thru a locker they have waaaaaay overpaid for and all of a sudden, 'WAIT, what's this?' In among all the junk/trash is a painting by Rembrandt worth thousands, or, a case full of one hundred dollar bills, or some other unrealistic find. Give me a break. Have you ever thought, what is this item or that item doing in a room full of junk, just abandoned by the owner? Yeah, right! It's a little like pro wrestling, scripted. stupak

It is not a full size, original, sign (like I sold to you). The real easy way to tell, without the size being given, is the different location of the mounting holes.

If that ad is for what I think it is, those 'American picker guys' are bigger jerks than they appear on TV. Can they spot my middle finger from there? Come and get it.

Scripted dramatics..........these "reality shows" are simply disgusting.......cannot imagine that the viewing public continues to swallow it.
