    A friend has a 1955 Austin London Taxi. He said it was a pre-war design (it has the narrow rounded grille that reminds me of a 37 La Salle) that was produced until the late 50s.
    It's in fine shape with new black paint and has the correct meter. It lacks the left front door, instead there is a open area to put luggage. Because of its gearing its top speed is only about 45 mph.
    He said he was told that they weren't retired until they had gone a million miles. Sounds plausable.

    I believe this design was the next generation. I recall seeing them in London in the 70s.

      I have ridden in one of those things. They are very interesting. The one I was in had 200,000kms on it and one injector pump rebuild under its hat and ran well. Were available in diesel or gas IIRC.
