I hear ya. Wrote my checks yesterday, one to the state, one to the feds. Frankly, the fretting over it is the worst part for me. My accountant is simply THE best, but it's up to me to compile receipts and figures. Mostly I lean on Linda to hold my hand through it I pledge to finally learn the Quickbooks program I bought over 6 months ago and use it, so I won't have the big stress weeks assembling everything. Also, I know I miss out on deductions because of lost/forgotten receipts and expenses, and QB will help with that too. I've always been the creative guy, and a terrible bean counter. I don't know how I'll fix that, but I'll never stop trying!

I do feel a little satisfaction in paying, though, even knowing how badly it will be mishandled. Reminds me I'm still productive and breadwinning. No handouts and no living off my woman for me!

Although, that money'd buy me a Super Lark

Things could be worse. I've got a friend who tells me he owes about $15K. Money set aside for it? Zero. Payment plan with the IRS? Can't- he's already on a plan, and you can't get another until any previous balance is paid off; still owes $9K on that. He asked me, and I had no idea what to advise except to talk to my accountant and go from there. Hope he doesn't go to jail.

So yeah, in the big picture I'm OK with my lot in life

I received a small refund from the state and federal government and spent it on a new Lincoln MIG 180C welder. Now I have no excuse not to finish repairing my '64 Daytona hartop.

Completed my taxes early as possible again this year. The good news was they were lower than they've been in years. The bad news is that was due to the numbers at the top of the return being much lower. The really bad news is that since all the numbers were so low, my employer decided to pull out of this market last month. That means the Government is likely to have much, much less to take from me next year. I know I'm not alone, and I've been preparing mentally and financially for this possibility for 2 1/2 years. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand why some want to raise taxes. The way this is going, there's going to be much less to tax from EVERYONE! I can't tell you the number of buildings that used to house my former customers that are now empty and lifeless. It's been really hard to watch. The industry I came from sees no sign of better times in at least 3-5 years.

If the public at large (the electorate) was the board of directors of a corporation, and they have been watching what's been going on the past two years, they'd be avoiding their responsibility if they didn't demand the CEO be replaced. All the taxes, regulations, rules and commitees won't have a thing to tax, rule, or decide unless a spark of leadership inspires it. That spark is currently nowhere to be found.

We have done an extremely poor job of hiring those who lead us. Hopefully, everyone, regardless of leaning, will look at the resume of our next leaders and not what they look like, what they say, or how they make them feel. It's no mystery to me why government must now look at hard, cold realities and match what it does to it's income like the rest of us. I'm not paying for as much of it anymore!
