  • Supermodifieds set world record at Bristol Motor Speedway

Some of my compatriots made a trip to Bristol with a few Supers to do an exhibition and look to set the record. Not hard to do with the Fastest Short Track Cars in the World

Mike Lichty (74) turned in consistent laps in the 13-second range, with a best of 13.245- average speed 144.871 MPH. AVERAGE! That tops the USAC sprinter that had turned 13.6. Mike ran the fastest laps without lifting all the way around! He thinks if they had their short-stroke engine and a bit more time to play with aero they could get under 13 seconds. Take a look and turn up the sound. Sweet, life-affirming music!

Jason Blonde had a bit of a pucker moment when he brushed the front-straight wall at around 160 MPH

God help me, I love these beasts

Those are the coolest racecars, ya know?
I remember watching them at the Copper World Classic years ago on ESPN and thinking they must be lots of fun to drive.

They're the best. The negative pressure from the wing tries to suck your helmet off. The G forces are insane. The sound... as sweet as it is, from inside the car it's indescribable...

In my view, to drive one is a gift from God Himself. These cars will let you know you surely are alive!

When I read the words, I thought that Mike Lichty was 74 years old. After looking at the picture, I think that you meant that he was driving car number 74. Maybe both are true.

          A sweet sound indeed......

Reminds me of the South Bend Motor Speedway. My first experience with racing at only 5 or 7 years old. They called it "Fastest Paved Quarter in the Midwest". Man would they get around there fast, even back in the fifties! It was even more fun when I lied about my age to get in the pits when I was a teenager.

          Roll on!

Ralph who was the flag man and an institution at SBMS passed away a few weeks ago. I can't recall his last name at the moment. They used to have what I think they called "Street Drags" and a driver they called Moondog who drove an early FORD Ranchero used to win a lot of races. That would have been in the mid-seventies. One night a kid wiped the side off of a Buick 225 on the wall and the announcer asked, "What is he going to tell his dad?"
