  • The Year 1901

Autocar which was built in Ardmore Pennsylvania from 1901 through 1912, started using drive shafts in 1901 on their cars. This is believe to be a first for the auto industry in the US.

Autocar cars date from 1897 to 1911. After that, they only made trucks. The cars were made in Pittsburg 1897-1899 and Ardmore 1900-1911. In 1901 they made the first multi-cylinder shaft-drive car in America.

Gary Thanks for the correction but certainly Autocar had to be among the first. Lewis Clark and his brothers John and James along with their father Charles founded the Pittsburgh Motor Vehicle Company in 1897. They produced trikes and four-wheelers under the trade name Pittsburgh. They moved to Ardmore in April 1900. Their highest year of production under the name Autocar was 1907 when they sold 823 vehicles.

And the driver could literally "dip" his light for oncoming traffic
