  • Any body know wha kind of engine this is?

I went to look at a -56 Buick today & got pretty disapointed when I lifted the hood...
(at least it seems to be painted "Buick Green" on the valve covers but to me it looks like some cheap Olds or Chevy engine)
So does any one here know what this engine is?:

...or maybe some body could enlighten me how to spot the brand of it? The owner says he don't know, he bought it like this.

The front mounted distributor pretty much identifies it as a later Buick; anything from 300" to 455". The SBC and Olds have rear distributors.

1960-75 Buick engine code decoder reveals the stamp location, engine displacement, horse power, compression ratio, and Carburetor configuration.

I hope these links work for you...

I haven't been able to look at it since I took the pictures but I sure would like to know if there's a way to see what kind it is from just the pictures, as if it's sb or bb.
(without being close up to see the number)

I agree. Late sixties early 70's Buick, 350 most likely, due to early power steering pump.

From the valve covers it looks to be a 455 1971 or newer. 1975 and newer were painted turquoise blue from the factory.

Aha... A 455, so no 350 as Bussard wrote? Sure fits such heavy car better.

Oldsmobiles were always just a half notch below Buicks. My 2003 Olds Aurora has a 4.0 L Cadillac Northstar V8. The same-year counterpart Buick LeSabre had a 3.8 L pushrod V6.
