Taxi commissions have no soul, no romance. The one here in DC made one of the local taxi companies remove from service a couple of late 1940s LWB DeSotos that it had restored as taxis for advertising purposes. It was always a nice surprise seeing them driving around town.

Odd coincidence. One of the Charlottesville, Va taxi companies has/had a 1940s DeSoto taxi.

During the 1940s, Chrysler made a long wheelbase Desoto specifically for taxi applications. I clearly remember riding in them in New York City. As I recall, they were called Sky-Vue or something similar, as they had a sunroof over the passenger section. Enormous leg room in the back -- enough for two jump seats.

In one town I worked in, the fire chief drove a 1964(?) Plymouth Fury fire department official vehicle. It was present for the 17 years I worked in the area from 1983 to 2000. Hopefully it's still in official use.

Is anything supposed to last more then seven years in out disposable society? Most of these Crown Vics had two lives the first as a police car and then as a cab. The police had to give them up first as Ford just chose to discontinue the production of the Lincoln/Mercury/Crown Victoria. Nobody wanted to see them go. Where I live you could drive these things forever!
