  • The 'Arthur M Anderson' arrived today in Duluth, MN as the Great Lakes shipping season has begun.

Ice breakers went through the Soo Locks and to the port of Duluth last week to begin the shipping season. The Arthur M Anderson often brings in limestone and hauls away taconite pellets from Duluth. If you are not familiar with the Arthur M Anderson, it was the last ship to make contact with the Edmund Fitzgerald before it sank in November 1975. More info here: SS Arthur M. Anderson - Wikipedia

They opened the Poe Lock on Friday so they were early in line. Even more, the Anderson turned around and went looking to see if they could assist the Fitz.

I've posted Dan Hall's rendition before but sailors like those folks on the Anderson deserve credit for what they did.

      Thanks for the post, Bob

Bernie Cooper (1919-1993), captain of the Arthur M Anderson back in 1975, was a very brave man, a hero. As for Dan Hall, though his message is good, he is no Gordon Lightfoot.

My autographed portrait of the Fitz hangs over the fireplace & the ice in Green Bay is breaking up, time for the ship parade to begin !

The ship has already departed from the Duluth port today with a load of taconite (iron ore pellets) and headed to Gary, Indiana.

You are correct, Ernest M. McSorley.

                    Brent,
Thanks for posting. It is most interesting, particularly how long it is and how fast it travels.

You are welcome! I think it would be interesting to ride along and experience what my grandfather had back when he was a ship cook back in the late1950's.

I've been searching for video of the Arthur M Anderson porting in Gary, Indiana but have been unsuccessful. Perhaps there are no public-accessible internet-connected cameras in the Gary, Indiana harbor?
Shown below is a satellite map of the Gary, Indiana U.S. Steel mill with an approximate 1000 foot-long ship in dock that I assume is unloading ore.

Arthur M Anderson made back into the port of Duluth this morning (Thursday, 4/7/2022). I was unable to find any video from when it was ported at Gary, Indiana and was surprised that it had already returned for it's second load of taconite of the season.

Well that was a quick turn around, it departed yesterday just prior to midnight. No mention as to where it is headed.
