  • Arabia Steamboat Museum Kansas City MO

Anybody else been there? My wife and I spent the afternoon there Sunday, June 13, on the return trip from cousin George Krem's wedding in Lindsborg KS.

What an incredible story and adventure: The Arabia Steamboat Museum. Must be seen to be believed.

Very interesting Bob. I had never heard of it but will make sure we visit the museum the next time we are in the area.

In 1999 the ASC Midwest zone meet was held in Grandview, Mo. The Arabia Steamboat Museum was a stop on the driving tour, so I know there were a bunch of Studebaker owners who had the opportunity to go through it.

What an amazing display of history. I’m glad to hear it is still open. As I recall, it was privately funded and since moving away from Missouri I’ve wondered if it could survive.

I highly recommend it to anyone curious about mid-nineteenth century history and technology.

Did you buy the book, Bob? I did, but lent it out many years ago. I liked it so much that I searched eBay several years ago and bought another copy.

I just realized that I can’t post pictures here in “Stove Huggers”. I had taken a picture of the cover of the book. It’s called “Treasure in a Cornfield” by Greg Hawley

        Yes, it’s a great one!
We went mebbe 18 years ago with a 3 kids, and all 5 of us loved it.
At that time one of the original “hunters” was there, and after the movie he answered questions until there weren’t any more to ask.

And now the five principle players in its discovery and excavation have located another, The Malta, and have begun recovery efforts on it.

Thanks, guys; it has been there long enough that I thought others had likely enjoyed it, too.

No, Tom; I didn't buy the book, but wish I had.

True, Brad; we saw a little about having located The Malta and their plans to unearth it.

Sadly, two of the five team members have since passed away, so there are only three left to pursue The Malta. Perhaps they will enlist others, having seen the success of The Arabia project.

[The father of the two sons and one of the two sons (I forget their names) have passed. The one son was killed in a violent car accident in which one of two oncoming street racers went out of control and hit the son's truck head-on. He was only 50 when it happened, IIRC. The lady behind the counter at the gift shop related the tragic details as I was reading his obituary they had posted. ] BP

              Bob,
I caught a program regarding Curse of Oak Island Digging Deeper and they featured the Arabia, it's museum and the latest find, the steamboat Malta in a Cornfield!
It is fascinating history of early Western America mostly unheard of until now.
This is definitely on our must see list.
              Thanks for posting.
