I've used blade razors for close to sixty years. Just don't like electric and probably like to live dangerously with a razor sharp blade a few millimeters of my carotid arteries.
The biggest problem has become the cost. I settled several years ago on Shick Hydro 5 blades and about any gel shaving cream. They usually last anywhere from 3 - 10 shaves. If I'm lucky, I can buy them at Walmart for $26/28 for 12/14 blades.
There has been a proliferation of commercials trying to sell other brands on line with gross claims of sharpness and longevity. The biggest problem has been getting my hands on a sample of any without signing up for a lifetime subscription. That I won't do as I'm skeptical of anyone that won't let me try them first.
Found Harry's Razors will let you do that. So I ordered their sample kit for $15 that includes shipping, a razor handle, three blades and a bomb of shaving gel.
I'm still using the first blade a month later, probably 18-20 shaves. I was satisfied enough to go back and order 16 more blade and three 4oz shaving gel for $40. That should take me more than a year into the future.
My beard is about average and I always clean the blade with water when I'm done, blow out the residual and wipe the blade backwards on a towel to dry the blade. A word of caution, there is a blade on the top of the razor to trim sideburns. Stay the heck away from it, it darn sharp.
Do I have anything to do with Harry's - Nope. Do I care if you buy one - Nope. Just a heads up on possibly a way to reduce your shaving cost if you like a blade razor.
