  • Hemi Stude

I said I would try and show some pictures of my 53 Commander with a '58 Chrysler 392 hemi installed in it, so here they are.

It's coupled to a GM Th 400 trans from TCI using a Hot Heads adapter. The rear axle is a Currie copy of a Ford 9" using a nodular iron case and all the other good stuff (31 spline axles, Detroit Locker, and big 11 x 2.25 drum brakes). If I remember right, it is 51.75" wide at the wheel mounting surface.

As you can see, the car is a long way from being done. It's a solid California car that is 99% complete body wise (the interior is missing the headliner and door panels). All the original Studebaker drive train was long gone when I bought the car so I planned from the beginning for it to be a Hot Rod.

If you don't see the pix that's my fault, I was trying to change them by using the edit icon and they vanished. I will re-post the pictures.

Well, it can't get much more hot-rod than that..! Awesome - and classic! I would think that a Hemi filled up the engine bay more than that, but it doesn't look too bad, really.

Good luck with that OH-SO-COOL automobile.

I had a 53 with a 392 Chrysler hemi when I was in Nebraska. That was the early 80's. I wish I still had it, not sure where it ended up. Yours is looking sweet.

Here are some new photos. Besides the drivetrain, I didn't change the car very much. The bumpers were smoothed. Emblems on the hood, trunk, and quarter panels removed, and the license plate gaurd was tucked in a little more by removing about an inch of steel and I changed the license plate because people were calling me STU. The interior is not done at all yet.

Wow, that is beautifull! What color is that? Did you warm up the hemi, or did you leave it stock? Either way, great choice!

                Thanks Dylan, Doug

The color of the paint is "DuPont Spectramaster Yellow" and it is a urethane enamel.

The hemi is bone stock except for the cam. It is a reground hydraulic unit from Chris Nielson. Tons of low end torque and a rumpy idle.

One thing I forgot to mention, the potmetal "Regal" trim around the windows is being replaced with a full set of stainless from a 55. You can see in the pictures that some of it is in place around the paint line, but the quarter window and upper door trim is not installed yet.

That is a great looking car. What color is the top white or gray?
There will be a 1:18th scale model issued soon that is a similer color.
                  Thank you for posting.

                        Thanks everyone,

Gary; the color of the top is common GMC truck white that they used for years. It looks white, but when I opened the paint can to spray the top, I thought they had mixed the wrong color. In the can it looks like a very, very light gray.

Dave can you email me direct?
Tried getting you through the forum and can't.
I have some questions about the rear end you used.
                          Thanks,
