  • 50 Champion

    Greetings. First post here.

Picked up a 50 Champion 4 door a few weeks ago. 1 owner car.

Parked in the same garage since 1983, summer driven periodically. 42467 miles. 1950 to 1983 it was up north by hudsons bay where there was never salt on the gravel roads and also indoor parked. The body is completely solid with original velvet black paint. I first saw the car about 7 years ago. The old guy had it outside the garage that day and it was running.

He passed about 2 years ago. His grandson was selling the car and the house. House sold a few days ago. Got until july 14 to evacuate from the garage.

Been tinkering and so far bought a new 6v battery and made some cables momentarily jumped the B and A on the regulator as per the manual. 6 new spark plugs, NGK BR6S. I use NGK in my honda. The only ones available here in stock besides champions. Never again with those stupid champions. The modern ones post 1995 go bad internally and stop firing enough to start. Played that game twice, 1981 AMC Concord they failed after 3000 km and it needed starting fluid to start in the summer before swapping them for bosch platinums. Then it happened again. 1968 AMC javelin after bringing it home just would not start at all. Replaced a bunch of stuff until I realized that the 5000 km 8 year old champions that I put in for the previous owner had failed too. Went to the parts store and they only had 4 bosch platinums in stock. Put them in the passenger bank and it fired right up. Put the other 4 in after they arrived. That was 15 years ago and they still work perfectly. All 14 champions were put in the same day on both cars.

I drained the tank and looked inside with my endo cam. Looks like new in there.

So anyways it still would not start. At that point I discovered a gas leak from where the fuel line goes into the brass fitting on the carb. I stopped everything until I found a new brass fitting. It was boogered up and someone tried making a gasket to fix a cross threaded flare fitting with a smooshed seat. Some genius who I am guessing was helping the old guy not only had the cap on 180 out despite the key that prevents that (autolite) but also had the firing order wrong. Its the original cap, rotor and wires except an NGK blue Click image for larger version

So this evening I fixed the firing order issue and it started right up. No misses. Let it run for about 5 min. 40 psi oil pressure and it is charging. All the lights work except the aftermarket turn signals. Horns work.

Some of us spend a lot of time and cash getting to this point. For you, it is your starting point. You are very fortunate.

Wow! That is a sweet find. Those tires look awfully big for that car. Too wide for the rims. There is a risk of cracking the rims. If you can find them, 185-75R15, or 195-75R15 would be much more appropriate. If not, an even skinnier tire would be OK.

Welcome! And thanks for posting. That is a really nice find. A little TLC and PM work and you should have a really nice cruiser. Sounds like you know what you are doing and have sorted through all the issues left by the previous person working on it..... By the way I share your sentiment on champion plugs.... Once had a 70 Cuda that I took out some old AC plugs and put in brand new Champions. After about a month it developed a miss.... Was tight on money so I just threw in one of the old AC's and miss went away... one by one the champions died and I put the AC's back in. It ran better on old AC plugs than it did on brand new champions. Haven't put a champion in anything since.

Very nice! I love the suicide doors on the older 4 door sedans. Great find.

Got the front brakes freed up. It now moves. The garage door will only open half way so was only able to go back about 4 feet then forward again a few times. It will be a 3 person job to get out of the garage. Clutch seems to work correctly.

Have to evacuate out of the garage by midnight on july 14 as the new house owners take possession july 15.

Instrument lights are out. Have to get some no. 55 bulbs.

100 minutes total of engine run time over the last 12 days.

Bought 5 new tires. 195/65/15 is the closest thing I could get. At $84 CAD each it was the only way. I have the same model of tires on 2 of my cars already. Canadian Tire Certified Alltrek.

The wheel shop that is refinishing the 5 wheels will put the tires on for free. Speaking to them today about the proper colour, comanche red. They no longer paint wheels, only powder coat.
