How Pen Stripes Were Invented?

I heard or had read that Ford Motor Co had one guy to pin strip all the Model A cars coming down the line. He was the only employee that had a cigar at the plant because Henry was death on tobacco. He used the triangle brush that all pin strippers use now. Imagine the cars passing and he would stripe both sides before the next car came.
There may have been pin stripping before on custom cars made in low volume before that but I don't have any history
That is how I remember the story.

Upon further research, it appears that pin striping was placed on Roman and Greek chariots. European and USA Coach makers for there fine high in coaches used gold leaf in embellishing the coach.
For the 40's and 50's the art made a comeback with the west coast and Von Dutch is credited with the start. When the cars were dechrcomed, the pin stripe would cover up the grind marks.

I believe that he is referring to horse drawn wagons, not engine powered wagons like the '54 Conestoga.Originally posted by Mike Van Veghten View Post
What year wagon were you thinking ?
I have a 54 Conestoga with the original paint on it...no pin striping.
