  • 1964 Cruiser

What is the current price of a 64 Cruiser that is in "good condition" powershift, disc brakes, A/c and many of the available accessories?

Perhaps that's a bit vague. Although it's likely still a year away, I want a guide as to what a nice Cruiser would cost - one that is rust free and usable as a driver until a restoration can occur. I know I'm in for approx AU$3500 for shipping cost CA to Australia.

Perhaps a Wagonaire with a slideable roof would be suitable - seem to recall they'd fixed the rust issues by then.

I'm open to suggestions as to a nice 64 car suitable as my first Studebaker for when the funds are available.

Let's look at it from the other end and work down....I doubt an absolute drop dead 64' Cruiser is worth more than $7-8K to the right buyer....That's excepting some rare optional equipment....I parted out a totalled 64' a few years back and all the goodies gleaned a bit over $1200. A running car from the Northeast with some rust issues, say fenders, trunk and some floor work...maybe $2500. A west coast car needing rubber, paint, headliner, interior complete..maybe $4K. A start....but right now with this economy (US)and the aging Stude and classic car hobbyists.....these are probably high estimates 1-2 years from now....

A PowerShift/AC Cruiser is going to be REAL hard to find. You might find one or the other of the two options, but both on the same car would be super rare.

IMHO, Studebaker (and all other car makers of the 60's) NEVER fixed "the rust issue". They got a little better at avoiding the tin worm, but I have seen plenty 64-66 Studebakers completely rusted out.

I think a '64 Cruiser is a great choice. I'd find the most rust free example you can in your price range and accept the equipment that it comes with.

            No doubt about that, Dick.

I had a friend, "Tim" (whose last name I had better not post in case he is still working for GM), who was a road man for Fisher Body in the late 60s and early 70s. He distinctly remembered going to an in-house training session on the Chevrolet Vega before it was introduced.

The guy conducting the training cited examples of the Vega's planned rust-proofing procedures, such as they were, and stated emphatically, "One thing about this little car; it won't rust!" [:0][^][:I]

I think in some cases they could not prevent the rust from starting before they left the showroom floor. Now for the question of the week, when was the last time you saw a Vega (or a Pinto, or Chevette or even a Yugo)? [?]

Gary, my answer would be too far OT, so I'll just say, I see them all fairly frequently!

Maybe another thread will come up related and I'll expand on that.

Gary, I actually saw a bright yellow Vega in Dawson Creek, B.C. this past September. It was running down the road, and looked good.

There was a Diesel chevette here in Trochu for a long time, and a guy I know in town has a Diesel Rabbit.

Yes bams, we weren't talking about seeing them IN junkyards.[)]

Gary, there's a Vega around here in black primer. I see it in town now and then. Same thing with the Pinto - there's a couple of those still plying the roads. Of course, not NEARLY as many as their contemporary *** cars.
I see a Yugo at least a couple times a week here. It's mounted on a post in front of a defunct wrecking yard! Now doesn't THAT seem proper, eh???[}]
