  • Group lunch with Anderman Studebaker dealership family in Mora, Minnesota 9-24-2016

Thanks to club member Vern Anderson, a small group of North Star Chapter members got together for lunch in Mora, Minnesota on Saturday.
Included in the group were forum regulars Bob Shaw (former forum moderator) and Steve Welsh.
There were six Studebakers in attendance with one of them being owned/driven by the son of the former owner of the Anderman Studebaker dealership of Mora, MN. I was so happy to meet Tom & Arlene, Tom having been an employee at his father's dealership which also sold International Harvester trucks (including pickups & Scouts). Arlene gave me copies of dealership photos and advertisements as shown below.

This is how the dealership looked when it began in 1950.

This is around 1954-1955. Anderman expanded the building as he included the Packard franchise in November of 1954.

This photo is from either late 1965 or early 1966. There is a 1966 Studebaker poster in the window and a banner for the new Scout 800 which debuted for 1966. Anderman became the local International Harvester truck dealer around 1963 when he moved into this new building. He quit selling International when they quit manufacturing pickups in 1975.

    Local newspaper article from 1956.

Promotional ad for the introduction of the new 1963 Studebakers:

This ad includes mention of the "Mr. Ed" show on channel 4, Thursday at 6:30pm

Until this recent luncheon, I was unaware that there had been a local Packard dealership....even though it only lasted four years.

    A Lark promotional pot holder.

The Studebaker hang-out in Mora, across the street from the former dealership which now sells used automobiles. My dirty but trusty 1963 Hawk and Marshall McGrew's 1962 Hawk.

Gene & Jan Anderson's 1963 Avanti and the Anderman's 1953 Champion Starliner (in the original paint).

The whole gang admiring Bob Shaw's 1960 Hawk.

    Vern Anderson's 1964 Daytona.

Too bad I didn't get a current photo of the old dealership. Oh well, it's probably for the best as it is surrounded by those ugly late model vehicles.

    Thanks for posting this.

    I notice unusual things.
The dealership went fromTexaco to Shell and then back to Texaco.
The curb cuts ('54-'55 pic) do not line up with the large bay doors.
It looks like the 1962 Hawk wants to get fed at the restaurant.
The signage on the building ('65-'66 pic) includes IH and Texaco, but not Studebaker.
I wonder what his new tow truck was in 1956.

I think the 1962 Hawk was showing its detailed engine to the waitress inside the restaurant.
I didn't get a copy, but I saw a color Polaroid that showed a large vertical Studebaker sign to the left of the building, perhaps on a steel pole.
As of 1957, Anderman Motors had a 1949-1953 Studebaker as shown in this dated photo, with Leo and his two youngest sons shown (the oldest son whom shared these photos). Somewhere in the 1960s, they purchased an R-190 International tow truck.

            Thanks for sharing!!!

POT HOLDER …a very interesting marketing gimmick!!!
Sadly nowadays some women wouldn't know a "pot holder" if one jumped up and bit them on the behind!

Thanks for the posting, Brent and thanks to Vern for setting this up. Had a real nice time visiting with all. I think a couple of the nice folks at Freddies Restaurant might be future Studebaker recruits!

Wish I'd have know about this. I'd have driven my Champion up. I get the email newsletter but I can't open a PDF.

It wasn't a North Star club event, just a lunch invite that came up about a week ago and turned out to be something very nice. Perhaps we can do it again next year and have more attendees?

Looks like a swell event, Brent; thanks for the report. How fortunate that so much of the dealership material has survived.

It sounds like Anderman "held on" with Studebaker to the very end, eh? BP

Brent That sure was a good time. We should do this every couple months or so. No club meeting just meet for lunch or breakfast somewhere and talk cars and Studebakers.
