Does it seem strange to anyone else that Studebaker didn't call the '55 a "Starliner" OR a "Starlight"? As we all know, it was called a 5-passenger coupe or 5-passenger hard top. Wonder why they went to such generic names when "Starlight" and "Starliner" were so neat?

How about the 4 door Mercedes CLS 550? They refer to it as a 4 door coupe. I have never heard of a 4 door called a coupe before. Anyone else?

I always thought that the pillarless design looked better on all body styles including 2 doors, 4 doors and the rare station wagons.

Yup! The British Rover had a 4 door sedan in the 'P5' series called a "Coupe" from 1967-73. It was supposed to be a true 4 door hardtop, but it did gain a narrow, chromed B-pillar and thin chrome window frames om the doors.

Yes, Craig; I've seen one of those Bentleys in person and it is one gorgeous car. (Ironically, one of the few exclusively-Bentley dealerships in the country is only about 10 miles north of us in the small yuppie 'burg of Zionsville IN.) [][8D] BP
Does Zionsville have a dealer for one of these?[:0] Here's one more true hardtop!

Craig, they used to. The dealership Bob mentioned -- formerly known as Albers Rolls-Royce -- sold both R-R and Bentley until the two marques were separated a few years ago. It was a neat place, right in the middle of this (used to be) quaint, tiny town. Now I don't know where you'd go to get a Rolls-Royce if you live in Indiana. Chicago, maybe???

The truth I was told at Manchester college vehicle restoration class 1997-2001. In the UK car manufacturers called a a car with 2 doors a solid "B" post. and a frame that went all the way around the door a 2door saloon. But the "c" post made the differents like on a classic mini 1959-2001 because the c post was between 75-90 degrees thats what made it a saloon in the uk.
a 2 door coach, or 2 door sedan in the US. But when you change the angle of the "c" post less then 75 dedrees thats why Toyota Celica and other car manufacturers can charge the ridiculous. amount thay do for their cars.ie like Ferrari ,Lambergeni, Rolls-Royce. But i am with you on this one a 2 door hard-top meant a pillarless window 2 door both window,s must roll down and you can past your hand through the openen. I blame the EU. LOL. after all iam a child of the 60,s

                              Bob,
Thanks for bringing up the subject. Whenever I hear someone in the hobby refer to a 2-door sedan as a "post", it sends me up the wall.
I'm over 70 and remember when hardtops were the thing and all of us knew what to call the various body types.
I guess that all those younger folks in the hobby never knew what to call these cars.
I guess my '59 Lark Hardtop is a non-post (grin).
