  • '56 Golden Hawk Barn Find

Family of a long time Stude owner asked me to post this car. I believe he bought the car new and pulled it from service in about 1963 with around 84K miles (bought a new GT Hawk and Wagonaire for his growing family). He started removing trim parts for a trip to the body shop, but that never happened. All the removed parts are in the trunk and the car was run periodically over the years.

Unfortunately, time and health issues kept him from following his dream to restore the car and it has sat without running for a long time. Grabbed the fan and couldn't get any movement, but a battery would answer that question better. I didn't get really carried away with my inspection, but the hog troughs are gone and the lower frame plate has "grown" in places. Poor lighting and it's position in the "barn" made a complete report difficult at the time. I do have access to the car for a better look for a serious lead. Hood, deck lid and doors open and close as they should with rockers and sill plates still in place, so it does have some solid structure.

Obviously, the car will need everything, but a good cleaning inside and out, install the trim parts, a set of tires and getting it running again would present this car very well. Family is looking for around $4500 with a clear title and from what I've seen, that seems like a fair price. You can PM me for more info. Thanks, Scott

<>but the hog troughs are gone and the lower frame plate has "grown" in places<>

The hog troughs are "Gone" as in rusted out, or removed?

Frame has "grown" means what exactly? Serious rust or...?

Sometimes using slang in a description can cause confusion, especially in written communication.

Hog trough on the drivers side is rusted through. Rust has built up between the frame rail and lower plate in at least one spot from reaching under in the dark with my hand. Can't say for sure how the passenger side is without better access. Sorry for the confusion.

It even has the correct door mounted seat belts and 1956 wheelcovers.

I can not tell what is on the bottom of the dash at the left end.

            I believe it's a speaker control.

Bob, I have the serial number, but will need to check with the family before posting, shouldn't be a problem.

Certainly a very restorable, unmolested Hawk.....but it will take quite a bit of 'green' to bring it back!

Talked some more with them today and found he bought the car used (about a year old) when they lived in Montana. He upgraded to an R2 GT in '63, so the '56 was put away. It didn't get used as a high school car or even a second car, just put away. They didn't have a problem with sharing the serial number, so here it is: 6032588

Thanks, Skinny. It's not the other 1956 Golden Hawk sold new at my Dad's dealership, although it is the same color combination.

I will alert Frank Ambrogio to this car in the event that it is not on his 1956 Golden Hawk records. BP

Scott, just give in and buy the car....you know you want it!
When you get it to be a driver, I'll bring a Studebaker over and we will convoy out to the Black Hills.

Trust me, it crossed my mind, but then I checked my bank account.........
Anyway, I believe another forum member has struck a deal with the family, so that lifts the temptation off my shoulders. Now, if I could just find the right person to take on my Marshal project this quickly.......

Sunglow Gold/Snowcap White was the SECOND most popular 1956 Golden Hawk color combination, so to locate a certain car just going by that color combo, well, chances are pretty slim Bob!

The photos are taken with a flash in a dark corner and the camera is set for fluorescent lights as I use it daily for E-Bay pics. I was thinking this car could be 1 of the 9 Yellowstone/Snowcap cars. I'll check again tomorrow, probably is Sunglow, just didn't look dark enough in person.
