Nissan could have kept Studebaker in business?

Just to add a little insult to Nissan, while at the South Bend meet, the power window in my Titan was stuck down. I went to Gurley Leep Nissan in Mishiwaka and they replaced motor and regulator for $600 USD. It lasted until I made it back to Ontario, then it died. My Nissan dealer in Ontario discovered they used after market parts but charged me for Nissan parts. They would not return calls or faxes from an Ontario Nissan dealer. I don't rely on warranties but I will see these guys again (next South Bend meet). Anybody else deal with these guys?

Dealer principal Mike Leep is a strong supporter of the Studebaker National Museum. You might try to connect with him. Mike also operates several other auto stores in the area, including Mercedes-Benz. The Gurley-Leep group has a good reputation in the community.

It's a fact Studebaker management made a lot of dumb decisions down through the decades that would have insured the continuing success of the company.... But they chose poorly. This was one of those times.

Thanks Nick for this added info which I've now read. What I find interesting is that Hagerty historian Glenn Arlt is supposed to have provided his comments to the Datsun Forum less than 6 months ago (Dec 2015). My comments in the thread started by Bob Palma and referred to by Craig Parslow in this thread contain my response to incorrect information.

Again for the record....(1) Richard Nixon was not employed by Studebaker but was the law partner of Studebaker Corporation Chairman Randolph Guthrie, (2) The picture used is not that of the Hamilton Studebaker plant/head office but rather that of Otis Elevator, (3) The plan was to assemble Datsun cars in Hamilton and 700 jobs would not have been lost, (4) I was completely briefed on what Grundy's Japanese exercise was about and much of his efforts were based on his own intuition along with consultation with our Vice Presidents in Canada, not direction from above.

Perhaps it would be appropriate if blog contributors would do a but more homework before they speculate "fact".

Thank you Brad for the plug. My book has been on the market since 2009 and at no time has any editor or blogger ever taken the trouble to contact me for confirmation before they published their comments. So I have to assume they've never bothered to read it.

The first edition sold out over two years ago and was reprinted. Copies are still available in limited supply from the Studebaker National Museum and the Avanti Owners Association International. Our publisher recently advised that there were less than 3 dozen copies left in their warehouse. At this time there are no plans for a third edition, unless there is suddenly a huge demand out there.

Stu gracelessly signed a copy of his book for me and it is very interesting reading!
It turns out that Stu and I were both married in Toronto in 1957.
My wife was living in Chicago but I loved it in Toronto and wanted to stay there.

A lot of younger people believe Wikipedia is a valid source! For all of us growing up in the "Cronkite or the Huntley-Brinkley" era that is just wrong. My daughter worked in TV and had to constantly remind writers/story tellers double check every fact with reliable sources NOT Wikipedia! But of course if it is on the internet it must be true prevails. Have fun
