  • LED interior lights

Just had some 12v LED interior light bulbs delivered today.
Just had to put them in the 50 Starlight and see the results
Oh boy what an improvement over the old original yellowish bulbs
Now I`m sure I will be able to actually read a map at night !!!!!!
Taken in daylight and now at night last picture is taken from the front looking through the windshield you can see how bright they are against the room light to the right of the picture

These were a sample prior to an order.
They will be $15 for both the dash light and the rear light when they arrive.
The voltage range is 9 to 14 volt with a 27 LED chip 6000k super white brightness

Did you convert the car to 12 volts, or are the LEDs working on 6 volts?

LEDs are great for many applications, just be sure your interior light doesn't require 2 contacts on the base. Some of the later cars, like my '63 Hawk, use 2-contact bulbs, the brass base is not used for ground.

These are the ones that use the two contacts on the base and not the base itself.

Yes Roy I converted to 12 volt neg ground.
But they may also work on a charging 6 volt being there volt range is 9 to 14 volt, ground won`t matter as it will just be a case of turning it 180 if it doesn`t.
But mine worked straight away I didn`t have to try turning them.

                All over at RV stores...
I bought a bunch from Amazon for the trailer.... 1156 bases, and 194 bases... Look like teeny ping pong paddles.

So those just plug in, where the regular bulbs are plugged in? If its that simple, I'm gonna have to get my hands on some of them.

Did this many years ago, possible 7 or 8, and they all worked well. I have all the car changed over except the headlights. Now I guess they are cheaper but I liked the fact that I could see the gauges and especially that the interior light will not melt the plastic cover, or make it brittle.

P.S. I have posted this before but if anyone is interested here is what I used for my 59 Lark.

Interior Light: 12V 63-LED WARM WHITE RV Marine Anchor Light 1142 BA15D

                    License Plate Lamps: 2PC G18/BA15S 67 5007 9 LED Bulbs White Turn Light 1156

                    Dash Lamps: Ba9s 12V White Led Light Bulb 1895 53 57 T4W 182 1445

Front Turn Signal/Parking Lamps: 2x 1157 24 LED Car Front Turn Signal Light Bulbs White*

Note 1: To use LED turn signal lamps a Load Equalizer must be used otherwise the flasher can not detect the signal because of the low current draw. Between $3-6 each, 2 are needed.

Note 2: New LED Flasher (EFL-2) can replace original style and can be used with LED or incandescent bulbs or mixed and there is no need for the Load Equalizers. About $15.00
Rear Brake/Running Lamps: 2pcs SUPER RED 24 LED TURN SIGNAL BRAKE LIGHT BULBS 1157 BAY15D 12V

Yes they do just change directly over keeping the original interior and dash map light sockets

Len has it correct but since he installed his, front turn signals are now available that change color from a white running light to amber for the turn signal so on a turn it will alternate from white to amber.
Also care must be exercised in the amount of LED`S the bulb has when it comes to the rear number plate light, too many and it will not go in the housing due to the length.
I`ve also illuminated the hood spear on my 50 Champion using a BA9s 5/8 dash socket and various colored LED`s from White,Blue,Amber,Green or Red Click image for larger version

Just type in LED on e-bay and these lights are by the millions, and super cheap. if you aren't in a hurry to get them order them from China for pennies, I did my toyota and you can get way more light than you actually need, i did my trunk and it is wonderful at night. You can also get 3rd brake lights of all types. There are some 6 volt lights you can buy that work great, but if you try to use the square, rectangle, or round led they won't be as bright on 6 volts.

I might have to look into those white to amber lights. It should work well as the front lens is more clear than any color.

If you change your turn signal/running lights to LED, you will most likely have to update your flasher to an electronic style.
The LED's do not draw enough amps to trip the bi-metallic strip in old style flashers.
                              Easy fix...
