  • Packard 282 Straight Eight Parts or Engine Needed

My mechanic called yesterday and he has a 1940 in the shop that has sufferred a major meltdown. Found piston in the oil pan, no rod bearing left in the rod, crank and cylinder badly scored. Sadly most of the Packard people I used to deal with have passed away does anyone have any sources besides Kanter? How long did Packard use this engine? Anyone know of a replacement engine preferibly close to Fort Worth TX.

Are the folks from the Packard Farm in Massachusetts still around?
I used to deal with them back in the 70's. Had parts for 1938 and 1955 Packards I had back then.

There's nowhere enough information to provide any meaningful suggestions.

        1. Which 1940 Packard? There were three completely different engines used that year.
        2. Does he want a professional rebuild? A shadetree rebuild? A core engine he can rebuild himself? Parts to do a rebuild?
        3. There's nothing in that "major meltdown" which a professonal engine shop doesn't repair on a regular basis. Is he trying to save money by sourcing a used running engine? (Now that one thinks of it, CAPO has an even more melodious sound than does CASO.)

          Hi

The 282 cu. in. straight eight was built by Packard from 1936 through 1947. Although there are detail differences, its substantially the same engine throughout.

Here are two on-line sources you should post your engine needs and request for help:

Thanks for the responses. Excellant example of an uniformed owner that does not belong to the local or national clubs so he has no contacts when assistance is needed. Mechanic is trying to help his customer but his normal parts suppliers don't have parts for this type of auto. Have located a engine with all new parts from an abandoned project that will hopefully provide the major parts & learned that Studebaker Vendor Barry Hackney has some valves and other parts if needed. Again thanks for the sources and excellant references

              Hi

Glad you found parts and sources for help. You can do the owner a tremendous favorite by encouraging him to join The Packard Club which is the national organization and then also join the region for his area, there are four Texas regions.

The PackardĀ® Club is dedicated to the enjoyment, maintenance, and accurate restoration and preservation of the products and history of The PackardĀ® Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan, a manufacturer of one of the greatest marques in world history; on land, in the air, or on the sea: Automobiles, Trucks and Professional vehicles.

Not only will he find a wealth of knowledge and help, he'll meet legions of great, friendly Packard enthusiasts glad to have him join in. The 39th Annual Texas Packard Meet is coming up April 1-3, 2016 at Kerrville, Texas, would be worthwhile to visit just to meet the folks and see what its all about. Good luck with his revival of a fine car.
