  • A "Studebaker" surprise at the Bank

Yesterday, I went to my local Bank to take care of a couple of routine transactions. As I entered, I was greeted by the usual bevy of pleasant tellers and clerks. The main conversation was about the big swing in the weather from last week. Last week, we were in the middle of, what passes for extreme winter weather for this part of the south. We were experiencing freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Schools, businesses, and institutions shutting down everywhere. Yesterday... Shirt sleeve weather.

After I had finished my business, the bank manager came rushing up to me and said, "Wait a minute, John!" I've got something for you!" Well, not knowing whether or not he had uncovered some long lost financial obligation that had confiscated what little remains of my assets, or perhaps a legitimate Nigerian cashiers check, I was conflicted by thoughts of what was about to happen.

Then...he presents me with the March edition of HEMMINGS CLASSIC CAR! The one with the Packard Hawk on the cover and an article by Bob Palma. I suppose if you are going to develop a reputation, being known as a Studebaker enthusiast, has its benefits. Due to other goings on, I have yet to read the articles, but plan to soon. Why...this could even lead me to expanding my car magazine subscriptions to more than just "Turning Wheels."

Have the magazine and read it back to front, as I strangely like to do. Great reading. Subscribe and you won't be disappointed. Writers are very "independent make" oriented and very Studebaker friendly.

After you have read the magazine it won't take long to
decide if you are going to subscribe or not.

I subscribe to three car magazines beside Turning Wheels: Hemmings Classic Car, Collectible Automobile, and American Collector Car. Stopped Hemmings Motor News as it is primarily a Cars for Sale publication and my car buying days are over having our '53 Starlight custom and our '63 Avanti just purchased from John Boyle.

I subscribed to the magazine through the generosity of Bob Palms, and I have enjoyed every issue I've received. It seems there is always at least one Studebaker reference in each copy. The one with the Packard Hawk also has a wonderful story about an older model.

Try it...you will like it. Best classic car magazine out there (next to turning wheels) in my opinion.

Well...as I told Bob in my private message...It would be rude of me to ignore his generous offer. And...being a natural "CASO"...the coupon is irresistible!

                            'Good one, Lew.

I'm not sure there's money to be made from these intro $12 subscriptions themselves. Rather, paid subscriptions are the basis for rates that can be charged advertisers, which makes sense.

That's why you get those ridiculously-cheap offers from Automobile Magazine, Hot Rod,and Motor Trend (among others) that sometimes amount to well under a buck an issue delivered; so they can charge more for advertising. Nothing wrong with that, it's a perfectly legitimate marketing tool, but some of those other magazines wind up having so much advertising in them they are a PITA to have lying around.

Hemmings seems to have a handle on that (not that I know anything about it; I don't), possibly charging more for existing ad space, rather than increasing the number of advertisements in the magazine. Personally, I like that....but, again, that's my theory; I have no inside knowledge on the matter. BP
