  • Avanti makes the World's Worst Cars book

I went in Barns & Noble to look for the truck book that BAMS had mentioned in another thread. I didn't find the book but I saw a book called "The World's Worst Cars". Since it was on the bargain table, I decided to buy it especially since the Avanti was in it.

    There are several categories:
I have listed mainly the American cars.

    BADLY BUILT
Chevy Caprice 76-90, Chevy Citation, Chevy Nova 70-79, Dodge Dart 63-66, Ford Maverick, and of course many Italian, British (Triumph TR7) and the Yugo

    DESIGN DISASTERS
AMC Gremlin, Pacer, Cadillac Seville 79-86, 97-2003, Corvair 61-70(???), Chrysler Airflow, Excalibur SSK(???), Ford Escort, Mustang 73-80, Pinto 71-80, Lexus SC430 2001-present, Mercedes Vaneo, Pontiac Aztek, and many European cars.

    FINANCIAL FAILURES
Bricklin SV-1, DeLorean, Edsel, Ford Explorer (tire trouble), Rolls Royce Camargue, Avanti, Suburu SVX, Tucker

    MISPLACED MARQUES
AMC Alliance, Chevrolet Chevette, Chrysler TC, Ford Aspire, Plymouth Cricket, Porsche Cayenne

    MOTORING MISFITS
AMC Eagle, Amphicar, Nash Metropolitan, Olds Toronado 66-70, Toyota Crown 67-74

I think that book would qualify as an entry in a book about the world's worst books. I reads like a biased and barely researched article. IF the car was so bad why did it go on and on after Studebaker? It's also pretty ridiculous to lump a bunch of buyers together as idiots who had more money than brains. It had some problems, but it pales in comparison to some of the big three's debacles. For such a lousy car it did remarkably well in breaking speed records. Just think what it could have done if it had been a "good" car![}]

I think any book that considers a Dodge Dart to be a "badly built" car needs no farther review! A Dart to me is pretty much the epitome of an old school American car that actually got everything right and was on top of its game, and the definition of "reliable."

Yes, Nate, I most definitely agree on that one! The 'A' body Valiant/Dart were one of the best cars Chrysler ever made! Chrysler did learn from the 1957 fiasco, but apparently forgot by the time the Aspen/Volare came out in late 1975.[]

I drove a '68 Dart 2dr. with a slant six and a straight 3-speed from the age of 16 until I graduated from college. It was a GREAT little car--so easy to maintain and as close to bullet-proof as any car I have ever owned (until the past 10-12 years when I strated driving brand new cars and swapping them out evey 120K miles or so).

                    Darts are GREAT little cars!

I think the Police would disagree with the Caprice listing as well, it
was a staple vehicle which many departments put 100,000s of miles on,
probably logged more miles as a model than any other car. Its running
gear was used on the later 91-96 Caprice, with the edition of the LT1
making it the fastest Police car ever. Most cops that had one mourn
the loss. There are companies that rebuild them to return to service
and MANY are still in use today (even the "boxys" listed 76-90).
