    Studependous - 1963 Studebaker Lark R2

A supercharged Lark with a Bonneville lineage

(snippet copy - See link or magazine for entire article)

Feature Article from Hemmings Muscle Machines

    September, 2015 - Jim Donnelly

It's only a memory now, akin to a mirage shimmering above the great expanses of Utah salt. But in 1963, a brace of factory-backed Studebakers set scads of speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats, and this is one of them. Manufacturer records make it clear that this 1963 R2 Super Lark was consigned by Studebaker Engineering to Andy Granatelli, who led the Studebaker assault on the salt that year. It was too little, too late to save the company, but Studebaker nonetheless reaped huge publicity as Granatelli's fleet of Larks and Avantis sent the U.S. Auto Club's speed records toppling in a variety of classes.

That's a very nice looking Lark. I also have a 63 black two door Lark, but mine is a six with a 3 speed without overdrive.

When I saw the title Studependous, I was reminded of a not street legal race Lark that showed up at La Palma for a few years. It had Studependous painted down the side (Both sides actually). Studerich has to remember it. Haven't heard about it for 20+ years.

There actually WAS a Studependous, you know. It was a Root Beer Brown '60 Lark 2 Door Sedan Drag Race car that ran all the "Strips" in Southern Calif.

Definately not Jon Myer's '63 R2 Lark. This car is an early non-Package R2 Lark with all of the Complete "Package" items added by the Factory. I believe it left the Factory sans any Badging at all.

(Info from a couple of sites...)

Was built and run by Mike Salamunovich, LA area. Got to run against him at a Stude meet at Irwindale in '77. I got a heckuva head start with my 16.20s 4-sp GT Hawk but he passed me just before the lights and nearly blew me off the track! The car was featured in the December 1973 Hot Rod mag. Thanx, KP

Looks like Joe Flannery's 63 that he drove from New Jersey to run at Pure Stock.

Really Jeff? You mean I must have seen you, or met you, at least seen YOUR Car in the 70's or something?
Were you "passing through" or actually LIVED in Calif.?

Rich...Rich...Rich.... I did not write that..
That was the 'copy' from the thread that also contained the picture.
                  Said so in the parenthesis...
That's one reason to add the link...for proper context and credit.

The Irwindale A.O.A. Meet on 4/10/1976 was the last time I raced Studependous, I sold the car about a month later. I still have the "Top Eliminator" trophy and wouldn't mind having the car back.

Good to hear from you. Mike!
                        Welcome to the Stude forum.
You will be glad to know that your car influenced a lot of people back in the day.
                        Still does!
Wouldn't it be neat if you did find it and got it back?
