I recently completed the installation of a rebuilt Paxton SN 60 Supercharger on my 64 Daytona Convertible. It is now running and everthing seems to be OK except the noise level of the Paxton. It has a very loud whining noise.I have had other supercharged cars in the past but don't remember them being so loud.Is there a significance to this level of noise, does this mean a shortened life span or should I see about having this Supercharger replaced.Your opinions are appreciated.

You should be able to hear the whine, it's part of the appeal.JDP Maryland

When I bought my R2 Avanti I noticed the supercharger had a low level whine while driving. Shortly after getting the car home the noise level started to increase so I pulled the belts off and tried turning the drive pulley by hand. There was a noticable and irregular resistance when I tried that so the belts have not been back on since... I will be sending the supercharger out for rebuilding when funds allow. Mind you, I still drive the car but without the supercharger hooked up.
As others have said, the whine is part of the charm. I would advise the same as r1lark... Get it checked out before you go any further.

Try changing belts first. Sometimes a belt will make a whining noise making you think it's the supercharger.

When mine went bad at first it sounded like alternator or generator with bad bearing. Sent to Phill Harris after repair no noise when running at all noise may be part of some cars but not in a Clipper. My belt will make noise for little while if car has not been driven as happens during winter little bar of soap rubbed on belt takes care of that.

If there is an opening anywhere in the hose leading from the air cleaner to the supercharger, the whine will be louder. Check that hose carefully to be sure that there are no holes or leaks, even on the underside.
Years ago after doing some work on my R3 Avanti, I forgot to tighten the clamp on the outlet hose at the back of the blower. The first time I got on it, the hose blew off when blower boost came up--the whine instantly was so loud it made me think something was wrong until I found the problem. Actually, there was something wrong...a loose hose. <G>
