  • 55 President supercharged

Studebakers seem to be following me home lately. The latest is a 55 President 4 Door. Seems to be a well optioned vehicle with a supercharger. Can anybody tell me what production numbers on a Supercharged President were? Haven't seen it in person, so, don't have VIN. Yet. Any info greatly appreciated

    Hi

"Can anybody tell me what production numbers on a (1955) Supercharged President (four door sedans) were?"

Zero. Superchargers were only fitted to 1957 and 1958 Golden Hawks, 1958 Packard Hawks and 1957 Packard Clipper Town Sedans and Country Sedans. Most likely you'll find the engine has been swapped into the car from one of these, especially from the Clipper models which were thought of as parts cars only for too long.

What Steve said, Mark, although you may find that the car has its original engine in it, to which the supercharger setup from a parts car was added. BP

This weekend! I'll also post some of an old TW cover car, I found 2 weeks ago, awakened after 9 years in a carport. Maybe even the full custom (also supercharged) that followed me home from Oregon.

It is possible that the 55 in question may have gotten a kit for the supercharger. McCulloch offered kits for other brands of cars too. I have a bracket that I took to Paxton back when they were still in Santa Monica & an employee there said my bracket looked like it was for a Lincoln.

If it has the rare McCulloch Studebaker kit, and not the later Golden Hawk type, then the kit is worth as much as the car! The McCulloch kit consisted of a completely different water manifold, oil filter system, valve covers, and things the Studebaker made system did not have. They used the wcfb also and not the pressure box around the Stromberg ww series.
There are pictures and an article in Motor Life of August 55.

Stude 259's seem to respond well to supercharging....my Speedster runs smoother and definitely has more 'pep' than with the original non-supercharged Carter WCFB setup.

Here's a pic of the '55 President. Couldn't get a lot of shots, owner was not around. Alas, no supercharger, it's running a Passmaster V8, 4bbl., the body appears to be just about perfect, interior is a little ropey, because the rear window is broken. Might have to save this one! The 1962 Hawk hybrid, with the '54 front clip, is one I did save. This car was built in the early '80s by BC Coastal Chapter Member Pete Yuen, and appeared on the back cover of the July 1986 issue of TW. Pete would be pleased to know that an oil change and new plugs and carb, it runs better than my Avanti! It too is a very solid car
