      'Sure makes you wonder when the decision was made; that photo looks like October 1961, considering the foliage and temperate environment for the gentlemens' clothing. BP

          Another benefit of that photograph's early dating is that it helps to derail the "Avanti was supposed to be the Pace Car but wasn't ready so they substituted a Lark" nonsense.

          Obviously, with this documentation and dating, the new, 1962 Lark Daytona Convertible was the intended, chosen Pace Car from the get-go. BP

            Yep, that was always my impression. First compact to pace the race. The '40 Champion was the first closed car to pace the race.
