I'm guessing that a lot of you folks watch car shows like "What's My Car Worth." Today I saw the one with the guy with the big collection of fifties cars, plus every toy from that era he could fit in the space. So far so good until...he shows a magnificent Pierce-Arrow with a (wait for it) Chevy engine! He said that he took it to a classic car show and the asked him to leave as he had "defaced" the car. All I can say is this individual has more money than brains, and I only hope he saved the original engine. I yelled every deleted expletive I knew, in every language, and my wife came into the den and wanted to know if I was OK. I was so NOT OK. Yes, I know everyone has the right to do what he wishes with what he owns, but...? Now I wonder if he has some valuable artwork in his home and has painted a few of them over with pink and purple Rustoleum.

Maybe his car was lovely but the motor was destroyed. Maybe he wanted to drive it. Maybe he kept it all stock and easily put original.

Ron Pratt's collection that was auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson had a '36 Chrysler Imperial coupe hot rod. Everytime I see that car it chaps my ass. This car was bought out of a museum (1 of 4 known to exist) by another collector just to make a 'one off' hot rod. While it doesn't have a Chevy engine in it, I don't know if shoving a Viper V-10 engine in it is any better.

I've seen enough shows to know they could have used a much more common 4-door and made that a coupe. Why ruin a very rare car just to sooth your ego. The guy sold it almost immediately after finishing it.

Yeah, if you're gonna go Rod something save it from the crusher.. Not from a museum, or a collector....

A pierce Arrow V12 isn't too hard to find. Many American LeFrance Fire trucks had them. I believe this was talked about before on this forum. It was determined the owner kept the original engine.

Reminds me of the beautiful Kaiser Darrin I saw at a Good-Guys show with a 502 big block Chevy in it. The owner seemed to revel in the fact that it annoyed the purists. He did say the car was a basket case when got it.

Was it a real Pierce Arrow or a replica? Didn't know there was such a thing until I recently saw a replica.

I think I've told you all before about the guy I met in Bavaria that had a secret room under his Gasthaus with his private weapons collection and his most prized possession - a WWII jeep in pristine - unrestored but looks like it had just rolled out of the factory - condition. He had it fitted with a Mercedes engine and tranny. The original engine sits on a special stand and also looks brand new. He drives the jeep occasionally, thus the MB engine, and keeps the engine and original tranny on the stand to protect it and only puts it in the Jeep for parades and shows and such. He's got his shop set up so he can swap the engines and transmissions in less than half an hour by himself.

I've said before that I'd like to have a Stude driver with a Toyota V12 set up so that I can swap it out easily whenever I want to.

Maybe the guy with the Pierce Arrow did something similar. Maybe not.

With all due respect, do you really believe that the founding fathers when drafting the the "C" had in mind that some one could or could not destroy or modify a Pierce Arrow?

I think the point Jeff was making is: it's your car, it's your money, it's your choice. No law prevents you doing what you want with it, no matter what anyone else thinks!

                              That's all.
