Oil Dipstick Location

    StudeRich Can you tell me if I have the correct dipstick tube for a '54 Champion?
    And can you tell me if this is the correct clip? And do you have any tips on the install? The tube seems to have zero wiggle room. Not sure how to get it in place!Click image for larger version

      Another couple questions, Rich... is the tube you see with the ruler next to actually supposed to fit into the hole that leads to the oil pan? Or does the retainer clip simply assist to holding it in place above the opening as the dip stick travels through both the tube and the receipt hole? Am I right in imagining that the smaller end to the left of the flange is what would be inserted into the hole (or rest on top of it, supported by the dipstick and retainer clip)? (I hope I make sense!)

      I realize that there are only a few different ways that this COULD be done, and that when I get into doing it, the answers will be more obvious. So, I will check this thread when I wake and deal with it with confidence if I don't hear from you. Thanks again.

    It's really easy to make a new longer dipstick and tube. I use to run inline sixes in all my Fords. Their dipstick tubes are also very short, hidden under the ignition wires and also impossible to find especially in the dark. When I'd get a new one first thing I'd do is replace the short tube with a long one (typically 3/8" tube) and install a long dipstick from a big V8 (sometimes using the V8 tube too) , then mark it to read correctly for the six. I replaced the dipstick on my Hawk's 289 to make it easier to get to also, but that was my fault for moving the battery to the right side.

    This is one of my Fords. The dipstick handle is now at the level of the carbs, (hard to see in the pic but its also a knife handle)

      I like the idea. Any idea on how to make sure that all is put back in place so that there is a confidence that it is reading correctly? (I imagine that one could drain the oil, determine the capacity, and mark it on the dipstick with each quart added.)

      just be sure your oil is full when you do it. Mark that level on the new stick as full, then transfer any other markings from the original stick.

      SEE how Easy that was? Sometimes our "Armchair Installations" make things seem a LOT harder, than actually DOING IT!

      Short end of the Tube into the Block, small end of Clip on the Tube, and Large end Under the Starter nose, Done!

      I'll bet some Stude. Employee got a $100.00 Reward for that Cheap Fix Idea!
