Only Studebaker in our area which is Ford

I never ever though I would own a Studebaker. Then one day a young man came up to me and said he had his dad car and ask if I wanted it. Just come and get it and drive it? What do you mean wanted me to drive it. I told him either sell it or keep it. That won't work having someone to work on it and drive it. Anyway we reach a deal and I bought it. A 1939 2 door sedan, Commander with 43,000 miles on it. When I went to get it I drove it home and now the story goes on. What a nice car for a 39. It has been sitting since 1980 and that not good. First new tires,brakes, wheel cylinders, gas tank clean, install overdrive, new drive shaft. The list goes on it still needs wiring harness. This is one nice car to drive. I am getting old but some day I would like to put this car in the Studebaker museum. Then they might not want it. I would like to know how rare it is. I seen several 4 doors but not any 39 2 doors sedan as yet.

That is a nice looking car. If down the road you want to donate the car you might consider the Studebaker National Foundation. When the Foundation is offered a car the Studebaker National Museum is given first right of refusal. If they do not want it the car will be placed on loan to another museum.

I really like that car. The lines are so smooth and flowing! The fender skirts just add to it in my opinion.

If you were a member of the ASC and had the July/August 2009 issue of their magazine you would know that 4218 were assembled including the 16 that were side mounted. The Presidents are much more scarce in that only 598 were built of which 3 had the side mounts. As for how many are left no way to say. I personally know of 4 Commanders and have heard about maybe 4-5 Presidents but there may be more. I might add that the '38s are even more scarce. The '38 and '39 had identical bodies only the front sheet metal was different. I know of no '38 President Club Sedan survivors of the 419 that were built.

As a follow-up I would point out that the 1940 Club Sedans looked very much like the '39s but almost nothing would interchange. The bodies while having similar proportions were totally different. If I recall only the front fenders (grilles will interchange but not the same). They are equally rare.

Thanks for the pictures of the Studebaker. I know of a 38 , 4 door which is very nice also. It a 8 cylinder. The dash is like mine. He wants to trade me but I will keep mine. I got my skirts from him. Skip had a extra set. It a President he has. I drove his and not any different. He needs overdrive also. I will get some pictures when I am over there. He might sell it. Anyway he talks about selling it?

I believe that "Ford" applies (qualifier of "area") to the "area", not to the "Studebaker".

Lucky man! Just when one thinks there are no more rare, desirable pre-war cars to be found, another one turns up. Your story suggest the former owner really had no idea what a gem he had. Be glad you were able to make it yours, its the kind of opportunity we all dream of happening.

The Club Sedans have the nicest proportions of all their 1938-40 models; long hood, short deck, close-coupled passenger compartment. Compare one in profile to a 1940-41 Lincoln Continental coupe, you'll see what I mean.
